Metallic Gold Kwanzaa Nail Art

kwanzaanails

A simple but elegant design for Kwanzaa representing the kinara. I actually made this more complicated than it needed to be since I wasn’t completely sure what I was doing when I started. So instead of applying the gold first then adding the candles on top, I actually applied the colors first, waited until they had dried, applied double pieces of striping tape and then added the gold last. Unnecessarily complicated, I know! But I love the end result regardless.

For the candles, I used Sparitual Radiant, a shimmery red, and Sinful Colors Secret Admirer, a black with silver shimmer. I used two different polishes for the green. I began with Sinful Colors San Francisco, a metallic green, but that was too sheer even after several coats. So I applied Ciaté La Dolce Vita, a darker green on top. But that was too dark for what I wanted, so then I added another layer of San Francisco over it to brighten the green. Finally, after securing the striping tape, I applied a thick layer of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Go For Gold. Next time I do a similar design, I’ll think it through before I start so I don’t wind up with a ton of layers!

Simple Stripes Pink Nails

watermeloncolorsnails

I did these nails a couple of weeks ago, but I was waiting until the holidays were over to post them. They’re simple, but I really like them. I wanted a bright pink mani with just a small detail. The pink is Revlon Parfumerie African Tea Rose, and the green stripe is Sinful Colors Nail Art Take Me To Heaven.

Some time ago I did a striped design using different finishes for each color and I really liked it, so I decided to do something similar. Continue reading

31DC2015 Inspired by a Tutorial – Simply Nailogical’s Reciprocal Gradient

31dc2015tutorial

I love these nails so much! These are inspired by Simply Nailogical’s Rainbow Reciprocal Scaled Gradient. Although her design is ten times more amazing (and you should definitely check it out if you haven’t already!), I’m really proud of how my nails turned out. I was a bit lazy and only did two out of the four gradients, and only in purple – though if I had just done an accent nail I probably would have ventured to do all the gradients, but since I had to remove these the next day, I simplified it. I used Fresh Paint Passion Fruit for the light purple and Finger Paints Amethyst Atelier for the dark purple. The darker polish went on opaque, but the light purple gave me a bit of trouble, because it didn’t sponge as opaque as it normally applies. My gradient also didn’t turn out as smooth as I wanted, but it still looks great. I couldn’t stop staring at my nails all day!

31DC2015 Inspired by a Flag – Medieval Banners

31dc2015flag

I have to say, the flag prompt is my least favorite – I’d prefer if it was something broader. Last year I did a design that incorporated many flags (you can see it here), and I really loved it, but this year I had no idea what to do. I didn’t want to use the U.S. flag since I usually do that for July 4th anyway. So a friend of mine suggested I do Medieval or Renaissance inspired flags, and I thought that’s a great idea! I didn’t use specific flags for these, and instead took inspiration from many, then created my own.

31DC2015 Stripes – Blue and Teal Stripes

I really like this pattern and color combo. Originally I was going to use curved french tip guides to make it less messy, but that ended up being just too complicated and time consuming, so I free-handed it instead. The blue is one of my favorites, Sinful Colors Most Sinful, and the teal is Sparitual Low Tide. This is a great color, but not the easiest to work with since it’s not completely opaque and I had to layer over some of the stripes to fix mistakes and unevenness.

Halloween 2015 – Trick or Treat! Nail Art

trickortreatnails

I’m so happy to have completed this challenge on time! It was a lot of fun and I loved all the Halloween designs I did and seeing everyone else’s. I decided to do ‘Treat’ for today, since my previous ones for this challenge were more on the spookier side – plus, Halloween candy is the best!

The background is Sinful Colors Dream On, a dark neon purple. I first drew the lollipops with Sally Hansen I Love Nail Art Pen in White. It’s the first time I’ve used these pens (I also bought a black one), and so far they’re working pretty well. I did have some issues with them dragging the nail polish as I was drawing, so I suggest letting the nail polish completely dry before using them. I’m glad I bought them though, it will make writing on my nails a lot easier. Lastly, I used Sinful Colors Nail Art Sunset and Hurricane Nail Art Yellow to color in the lollipops and create the stripes.

I guess it’s back to the 31 Day Challenge now!
