31DC2017 Animal Print – Grand Imperial Butterfly Nails

This year for the animal print prompt I did a design based on the Grand Imperial Butterfly. I think there are different types of it, but the ones I saw have wings featuring an orange to white gradient and black details. I thought the wings would be perfect for some nail art so I gave it a shot. I like how the design turned out even though the gradient could have been smoother. The spots remind me a bit of leopard print the way I did them, but on the photos they resemble waves more.

31DC2017 Stripes – Distressed Blue Nails

For today’s stripes prompt, I did some distressed inspired blue-green nails. These were pretty easy to do and they didn’t take long. I painted stripes using shades of blue and green and went over them with sheer colors to further mix them. I love this nail art and might do it again in the future with a warm color scheme.

31DC2017 Polka Dots – Gold On Burgundy Nails

One of my least favorite prompts of the challenge is polka dots. I always feel so uninspired when doing it, and looking back at my old nail art I’m only happy with the two most recent ones because I incorporated more than just the polka dots. I tried to create a spiral with the dots, but they just look randomly placed. Still, I like the combination of burgundy and gold and how the accent nail turned out. As usual I applied the glitter using a sponge for better coverage.

As you can see, my nails are much shorter here than they were yesterday. I’ve been doing the designs almost daily since I didn’t have any prepared ahead of time, and my nails have gotten pretty dry from all the nail polish remover. I was really pushing it before because my middle nail has two breaks, one on each side, and it was super close to breaking off. I can’t cut it down because the breaks are too far in, so I trimmed them all to lessen the stress. I’m really hoping I won’t have any more breaks for the remainder of the challenge!

31DC2017 Gradient – Strawberry Nails

I love how cute these look! I really wanted to use pink and green for a gradient and once I had the colors down I instantly thought of strawberries. I added some simple white dots and while they don’t look like perfect strawberries, it’s more of an abstract design.

31DC2017 Rainbow – Stripes Pattern Nails

This year I went with a more straightforward approach to the rainbow prompt. In the past I’ve placed the colors randomly but I really wanted to follow the color order this time. I wasn’t going to add pink originally, but without it the pattern would always be the same. I’m not sure how I feel about the white lines. I like how they break up the colors a bit, but they’re not as clean as I would have liked. Still a really fun and colorful design that I’m happy with overall!

31DC2017 Metallic – Autumn Inspired Nails

For today’s metallic prompt, I did a design that was inspired by the changing of the seasons. I was originally going to use all warm colors, but then I saw a moss green foil that I love and knew I had to incorporate it as well. I should have started with a metallic green base, but I didn’t so I had a few bald spots I covered up with polish.

The accent nail features a pattern of copper leaves I did using nail art stencils. I kept them over a neutral background since I thought adding them over the green would be too distracting. Finally, I added metal studs between the silver and copper on the middle and little fingers.

31DC2017 Black & White – Sketched Grid Nails

Looking back at my previous nail art for this prompt, I love nearly all of the black and white designs I’ve done, especially this one. In my first attempt, I used checkered stencils and added rhinestones over the black sections. It was terrible — I hadn’t placed the stencils straight enough, the rhinestones didn’t stand out, and on top of everything the top coat I was using smeared the black polish. I took everything off except the black accent nail and started over.

This time I kept the design much simpler and freehanded the grid instead of using stencils. I debated with filling in some of the squares, but I’m glad I didn’t because I prefer it this way. Apart from a few smudges thanks to my top coat, it looks much cleaner and less busy. I think it looks even better in person since the imperfections of the lines aren’t as noticeable.

31DC2017 Violet – Fading Lace Nails

This bright, almost neon purple is one of my favorite nail polishes and I think it pairs so well with a gold accent. I chose the colors before I actually knew what I wanted to do with the design which doesn’t happen often. Once I had the colors down, I looked through my nail art stash and decided I’d use some stencils since they wouldn’t take long. I chose a delicate spiral pattern and sponged over it with the background purple and a darker purple so it would fade out. I prefer using a sponge when dealing with stencils because it helps to avoid any leaks. I love how the gradient looks and I’m super happy with this design overall!

31DC2017 Blue – Leopard Print Nails

I’m a day late, but here are the nails for the blue prompt! I wasn’t sure what to do, so I went with leopard print which I haven’t done in a while. I’m really happy with how it looks and I love the holographic touches. I took the photos outside, but it wasn’t that sunny so the holo isn’t as obvious.

31DC2017 Green – Succulent Plant Nails

Here are some cute succulents for today’s prompt! I love these plants and have two of my own that have been doing pretty well.

I’ve had this design in my head for a while, and though it’s not exactly what I imagined, it’s close. The white lines in the background are meant to represent a window mosaic. I wanted to keep the focus on the plants themselves, so I kept it simple, using only one coat of glitter for the background. The white lines turned out thicker than I wanted, but I was kind of rushing to get the nail art done on time, so I didn’t redo it. My favorite is the one with the little pink flower!
